Dr. Shariq Nisar

In his career spanning over two decades, Dr Shariq has made some seminal contributions to India’s financial sector by developing products and services, which aimed at furthering financial inclusion as well as accelerating investments towards socially responsible businesses. Dr Shariq has many firsts to his name. He developed India’s first Shariah Index with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the first mutual fund scheme and the first venture capital scheme approved by SEBI - the Indian capital market regulator. He further went on to develop a Shariah Index for the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and played a critical role in the design and launch of the Shariah Index at the Chittagong Stock Exchange, Bangladesh. Dr Shariq also established India’s first Centre for Alternative Finance at the ITM Business School, Mumbai. He was invited to make a presentation before the Select Committee of the Indian Parliament during the discussion on the Insurance Amendment Bill, 2015. In 2019 he served as expert member of the Committee on Setting Up Health Insurance Hub, commissioned by the Insurance Information Bureau of India, a data repository of Indian Insurance regulator (IRDAI). He currently holds board positions at multiple organisations.

Dr Shariq has successfully undertaken numerous consulting assignments and has been involved in creating and structuring some of the landmark deals, both in India and overseas. He is also an established trainer and has undertaken multiple training assignments both for Islamic Banking and Finance as well as the broader financial markets. Over the years, he has trained numerous individuals including the top executives of organisations as well as the regulators, both in India and overseas. He also developed, designed and delivered Islamic Banking and Finance certification courses for the BSE Institute.

A former visiting fellow at Harvard Law School, Dr Shariq holds a PhD in Economics from the Aligarh Muslim University. A keen researcher, he has published books and has contributed chapters in various other books. He has authored and co-authored over 60 research papers and articles in some of the leading journals and magazines across the globe. He is a fellow of Bharat Inclusion Initiative for his research on Mutual Model of Health Insurance.

With his passion for teaching, Dr Shariq has been associated with numerous institutions in the country. He designed and developed Islamic Finance Program (Now MBA-IBF) for Aligarh Muslim University and Crescent Business School, Chennai. He is currently a Professor at Rizvi Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai. He also undertakes courses on Financial Markets at ITM Business School and the BSE Institute. Every year, Dr Shariq undertakes special sessions for the participants of the Certificate Course in Law and Regulation of Inclusive Finance at the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg. He has delivered lectures and talks at Harvard University, University of Tufts, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), School of Oriental and African Studies, SOAS University of London, University of East London, University of Liechtenstein, University of Ecuador, Vienna Business School. He has been invited to speak at more than 50 international conferences.

Dr Shariq is a recipient of many awards and recognition for his work. He was felicitated by Skoch Forum for Skoch Digital Inclusion Award, 2011 and received an honorary award by Islamic Finance Forum for South Asia for contribution to the Indian Financial System, 2016. In 2018, he received the Editor’s Choice Award for Excellence in Professional Services from Mid-Media Pvt. Ltd.
